Sometimes you feel like a nut, right? Then this simple and delicious Almond Joy Smoothie recipe is for you! Coconut, chocolate and almond goodness with some veggies to really kick it up a notch! A chocolate coconut smoothie that tastes like a shake and is ready in just a few minutes!

This chocolate coconut smoothie was inspired by one of my favorite candy: almond joy! Smooth, sweet and creamy with a touch of greens for a nutrition boost.

Why You Will Love This Chocolate Coconut Smoothie:

    • A thick chocolate shake like smoothie. Smoothies with chocolate in my opinion are the best. A chocolate shake flavor and texture in a glass that will also fuel your day.
    • It's a cold treat with a nutritious boost. A little spinach in your day but in the tastiest way! Chocolate and coconut flavors are what you will taste, but greens is what you will get. So easy to get the spinach in!
    • Easy to whip up in 5 minutes. Grab all the ingredients and pop it all in the blender. That is all there is to it when making this chocolate coconut smoothie!

    Ingredients and Substitutions:

To make this simple chocolate coconut smoothie, grab the following ingredients:

    • banana: I always opt for a frozen banana versus adding ice to thicken and cool my smoothies up. You want them to be on the ripe side versus green for more sweetness.
    • spinach: I prefer fresh spinach or other greens like kale. You could use frozen however I find that frozen is more detectable in the flavor of this smoothie.
    • coconut: unsweetened and shredded (If you can't find unsweetened, then just omit the maple)
    • cocoa powder: unsweetened cocoa powder is preferred, but sweetened will work. Just adjust the amount of sweetener you add in.
    • milk: regular or dairy free is great. Chocolate milk or chocolate dairy free milk is AMAZING. I just don't have it on hand regularly. I usually do whole or unsweetened vanilla almond milk for this smoothie. Coconut milk, not the kind in the can, is another great options for more
    • almond and vanilla extract: only a touch. Almond extract is very powerful so a little can go a long way.
    • sweetener: this is optional but I like to add a touch of maple syrup, a date or two or some honey. If you want to keep this almond joy smoothie vegan, just don't opt for the honey.

    Chocolate Coconut Smoothie Recipe Tips:

    • Use frozen bananas. Frozen bananas will make your almond joy smoothie thicker and creamier. You won't need to add any ice which tends to water down the flavor of the smoothie and no one wants that!
    • You can start with ½ cup of milk and then add more as desired. If you like a really thick smoothie, start with a little less milk. It is easier to add more milk in the end versus ending up with too much milk and a really thin smoothie. A tamper helps run everything through the blender if there isn't quite enough liquid at first.
    • A high powered blender will work best. I use a Vitamix Blender and 5 years after purchasing it, it still is running strong and has been well worth the investment.

    Variations and Add Ins:

    • a drizzle of chocolate sauce--whipped cream as well?? Yes!
    • Protein powder--feel free to kick up the protein and make this an Almond Joy Protein Smoothie! There are lots of fun flavors out there these days, but I am a fan of chocolate protein in this smoothie.
    • You could most certainly use chocolate milk for even more rich chocolate flavor.
    • Would you rather have an Almond Joy shake? Skip the banana and sub a few scoops of vanilla ice cream. Now we are talking!
    • Lessen the milk a bit and make this extra thick for a perfect chocolate coconut smoothie bowl. Add lots of toppings!
