Smoothies are the best way to pack in lots of fruits and veggies into what tastes like a milkshake. And this Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie with Avocado is full of lots of goodness with all the chocolatey flavor you love!

Big smoothie fan here, and this Blueberry Smoothie is the one I make 90% of the time. Or this Peanut Butter Mocha Smoothie for a coffee filled smoothie.

Most smoothies have a banana base, and the goal with this raspberry smoothie was to make sure it still tasted amazing without one. I get a lot of requests for smoothies without bananas so I hope this one is your new favorite!

Ingredients and Substitutions:

  • I have made this Chocolate Raspberry Avocado Smoothie with frozen as well as fresh raspberries. Either works well, however, the frozen berries are my personal preference. I like smoothies that are thick and ice cold. This one has the perfect texture when frozen berries are used. You can easily freeze your own fresh berries too!
  • Freezing the avocado in chunks or cubes is ideal as well for the perfect smoothie texture. My sister passed on a ton of frozen avocado they bought and never used so that’s essentially where this recipe came from!
  • You could add a protein kick by subbing your favorite chocolate protein powder for the cocoa powder. Just make sure it’s a powder you love the taste of. No smoothie will mask the flavor of an awful protein powder.
  • Chocolate milk, anyone? If you are all about the chocolate and want to take this raspberry smoothie to the next level, use chocolate milk instead of regular. Let me just say, WOW. There are plenty of dairy free chocolate beverages out there as well to choose from!

How to make this recipe:

The hardest part about making a smoothie is the texture. Too thick, too thin–it happens. So I have tried to help with this in how the smoothie is actually made.

  1. Pour the 1 1/4 cup milk into your high powered blender. Add in the spinach, banana (if using), avocado, cocoa powder and raspberries. You can add the sweetener at this time or wait.
  2. Blend on high. Slowly add in more milk as desired until the chocolate avocado smoothie is to your desired thickness.
  3. Add in sweetener to taste and enjoy!

Optional Add Ins:

The fun of smoothies is fine tuning them with all sorts of extra goodness.

As I mentioned, you could add some protein powder in place of the cocoa powder in this chocolate avocado smoothie. For some extra fiber, feel free to add some flax as well. You could also use a scoop of nut butter as well.

For a sweeter treat, add some chocolate syrup and whipped cream!

Notes and Tips:

  • If skipping the banana in this raspberry smoothie, I suggest increasing the avocado by about 1/2 to 3/4 cup. However, since the recipe starts with only 1 1/4 cup milk, you may be just fine. Lots of wiggle room though if necessary!
  • It’s hard to tell the exact number of avocados it will take to get 1 1/2 cup cubed avocado, but it will be about 1 1/2 – 2 small/medium avocados.
  • You may not need the sweetener. If your berries are on the sweet side and you are using the banana, it will likely be sweet enough. I suggest blending the smoothie and testing a spoonful before adding it.

I have a sweet tooth and I thought the sweetness was great! I only added 1 TBSP maple and no banana. I also added coffee powder. With no coffee powder it may not have needed the maple. I think it probably depends on the ripeness of your raspberries.

Great point–if the raspberries are nice and sweet, it helps! Glad you enjoyed it!

    3 stars
It was not as tasty as I hoped, but when I put it in a bowl and added toppings such as honey, I enjoyed it. Originally, it was not very sweet. (And this is coming from a girl who thinks most desserts are too sweet)

Yea, the use of the avocado really takes down the sweetness a lot. Thanks for the feedback!!
