French toast sticks are always a fan favorite–loved them at school in the mornings growing up! No need to do the frozen kind when you can so easily make your own!

Did I mention they are freezer friendly?! Serve them with a side of these air fryer apples or with these egg cups if that is too much work for the air fryer!

Why You Will Love These Air Fryer French Toast Sticks:

  • They take only a few minutes to prep. Whisk together the eggs with a few other ingredients, dip the bread, air fry and then add the cinnamon and sugar. All of that in under 15 minutes–so easy!
  • You can use any bread! Whole grain, gluten free, brioche, Texas toast–you name it, whatever works for you! That is probably what I love most about this air fryer French toast stick recipe! Varying the milk is ok as well!
  • Freezer friendly. You can make a bunch in one sitting and then freeze them for later. The kids will be so happy when these end up on their plates!
  • They are a great option for using up bread that you were going to throw away. This recipe is best with day old or slightly stale bread. The French toast sticks hold up better that way and don’t become overly soggy.

Recipe Ingredients:

  • bread: A thick cut bread is great for this recipe, but just about any bread can still do the trick. I love Brioche or Texas toast, but have used whole grain, thick sliced bread as well. Using day old bread is ideal. You can let is sit out overnight if it’s too fresh.
  • eggs: large eggs are ideal for these air fryer French toast sticks.
  • milk: The richer the milk you use, the better as well. I use whole milk.
  • cream: This is optional, but I like to add in a tablespoon for a richer flavor overall.
  • vanilla: a touch of extract for more flavor
  • cinnamon/sugar: this is to toss in after air frying. While it’s optional, I find this is what seals the deal for these French toast sticks

How to Make These Air Fryer French Toast Sticks Recipe:

  1. Slice the bread into thirds or fourths, depending on the width of your bread. I like my pieces about 1 1/2 or so inches wide.
  2. Combine the eggs, vanilla and milk in a bowl and whisk well to combine. Dip each piece of bread into the egg mixture and coat each side evenly. Allow any excess egg to drip off into the bowl.
  3. Place the egg coated bread onto parchment lined air fryer basket that is sprayed with oil. *I find that even a well oiled air fryer basket still ends up with French toast stuck to it, so parchment is highly recommended. Cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, depending on your air fryer.
  4. Toss the cooked French toast in cinnamon sugar mixture to coat.
  5. Enjoy with powdered sugar, berries, maple syrup, or any goodies you love!

Recipe Notes:

  • Air fryers are not all one in the same. Mine cooks and heats up very quickly. I find that even other recipes I have made in it cook several minutes quicker. When you flip them, if they are not crispy at all on the side facing up, you may want to wait another minute or so before flipping. Just keep an eye on your air fryer and all will be well!
  • Using stale bread can really make amazing French Toast. I have tried this and it makes the French Toast less likely to come out soggy. So bonus if your bread is about to go, it should make the best sticks!
  • You can freeze these Air Fryer French Toast Sticks so that they are ready when you need them. They will freeze for about 3 months. Pop them in the microwave for about a minute on a microwaveable dish. You can also pop them in the air fryer for a few minutes to re-heat. For best results, lay the sticks evenly on a pan and place in a freezer. Once they are frozen, transfer to a freezer safe bag.
