Cake in a minute? This easy 5 ingredient chocolate Nutella Mug Cake recipe is the perfect single serving chocolate cake. Rich and fudgy and all without flour! You can have dessert in under 5 minutes!

Nutella is my love language. On a day when I have time, I whip up these Nutella Crumble Bars, but sometimes mama needs a sweet treat and FAST.

Nutella Mug Cake for the WIN. Just a few ingredients and about 5 minutes is all you need to enjoy this rich, fudgy goodness!

Why this Nutella Mug Cake is the Best:

    • You get cake in 5 minutes! It's like winning the cake lottery! A chocolate cake in just a few minutes? It is possible with this recipe. Mug cakes are just the best!
    • No flour required. Whether you are gluten intolerant or out of flour, you are winning with this mug cake! A perfect flourless cake in a mug.
    • It's single serve. Sometimes you want cake but you don't want an entire cake, right? Or you don't have the time to wait for it to bake. This is one serving so you don't have to bother with any of the fuss.
    • You only need a few ingredients. Not much needed, and I always have everything on the list for this Nutella Mug cake in the kitchen. That is why it is my go to quick sweet treat!
    • Pairs so perfectly with ice cream! And not to mention this Chocolate Whipped Cream. I would go for all of the above!

    Ingredients:

    • nutella: Any chocolate hazelnut spread should work, but Nutella is always always on hand in our house! I have not tried a dairy free Nutella before, but you can make your own if you want to make it dairy free. Or maybe try a store bought? Let me know how it works!
    • egg: a large egg, room temperature is best
    • cocoa powder: unsweetened, you can use a dark cocoa for a richer, dark chocolate flavor
    • sugar or sweetener: you can adjust the sweetness to your liking. You can opt for honey or maple syrup if desired.
    • vanilla: just a touch will round it all out!
Labeled ingredients including egg, cocoa powder, vanilla, etc. in mixing bowl.

How to make this flourless nutella mug cake:

    1. Whisk all the ingredients together.
    2. Microwave for about 60-75 seconds.
    3. Allow to cool for several minutes and serve with a scoop of ice cream and extra Nutella drizzle.

Seriously, cake does not get easier!

    Expert Tips and Notes:

    • All microwaves are different so the you may need to cook yours a touch longer or not as long. I keep a pretty good eye on mine and you can tell when it's about ready because the cake will rise and it will not look wet any longer.
    • Use a microwave safe mug with sides that go straight up. You want the Nutella mug cake to expand up and cook evenly.
    • Start cook time at one minute. If a toothpick doesn't come up mostly clean, you can add another 15 or even 20 seconds.
    • Sweeten to your own taste. Since Nutella and most chocolate hazelnut spreads are already sweetened, you won't actually need too much but a little still is really nice to round out this rich treat in my opinion. IT will cut some of the bitterness from the cocoa powder for sure.

    Optional Add Ins:

Easily vary this Nutella Mug Cake recipe with some simple add ins!

    • chocolate chips
    • chocolate sprinkles
    • espresso powder
    • chopped toasted hazelnuts
    • add an extra dollop of Nutella in the center

    FAQs

Why is my mug cake so rubbery?

This more than likely means it has been overcooked. I advise you to start with 60 seconds cook time and then check the cake before adding more time. This will help you keep from overcooking your cake.

Can I cook my mug cake in the oven?

You certainly can! It will just take a bit longer. Preheat the oven to 350°F and pour batter in a greased dish. Bake for about 15 minutes.

    Ingredients

    • 2½ T Nutella or favorite chocolate hazelnut butter
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 - 2 teaspoon sugar or sweetener
    • 1 T unsweetened cocoa powder
    • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
    • Dash of sea salt

    Instructions

    • Whisk ingredients together in a small bowl.
    • Pour into a microwave safe mug.
    • Microwave for about 60-75 seconds. It will expand pretty high so look out!!! I find 90 seconds dries it out too much.
    • Let cool for several minutes and then eat it straight from the mug if you like! And extra dollop of nutella on top is always amazing as well.

I use Justin's chocolate hazelnut butter instead of Nutella - and I'm a dark chocolate fan so I didn't need any added sugar. The Justin's butter can be a little stiffer, so I had a little trouble mixing the egg in - I think next time I'll put it in the microwave for about 15 seconds to soften it up a bit. I probably need a few seconds less in my microwave - but some vanilla ice cream on top was also good! 😉 I don't love the texture of microwaved egg in recipes, but it definitely 'scratched the itch' and was easier than some other mug cake recipes I've tried with flour.

Good call on microwaving the Justin’s next time. That will def make a difference. Mug cakes are certainly not the real deal I’d cake but I agree, they can do the trick!!!

Good once cooked but my microwave must be alot less powerful than yours, the cake didn't rise or start to stop looking wet until after 4mins.

That is the hardest part about things like mug cakes in the microwave. Every microwave has a mind of it's own. Glad it at least worked out in the end. Thanks, Lee!

Pretty good for a flourless mug cake. A little on the slimy side from the egg so microwave it for maybe 90 seconds instead to dry it out a bit
