Why We Love These Chocolate Protein Overnight Oats

I recently had surgery and had to add 2 protein drinks per day to my diet each day the week leading up to the procedure. This got very old, very quickly. So I decided to become creative and worked on other ways to eat them. A protein packed overnight oats recipe was one of my favorites!

These chocolate protein overnight oats:

  • keep you fueled up all morning–the best breakfast recipe for sure!
  • make for a great protein packed midday snack (trust me)
  • can be prepped in just 5 minutes
  • are so simple to vary

You don’t have to make these with a protein shake–you can use milk and your favorite chocolate protein powder as well. Let me know what you think!

Ingredient notes

  • rolled oats: I prefer rolled oats, also called old-fashioned oats, in this protein overnight oats recipe. Some people like steel cut oats but they are way too chewy for my liking. If you only have quick oats, that is fine, but you may need to adjust the milk. For gluten-free, make sure the package says “certified gluten free.”
  • sweetener: I like a touch of pure maple syrup. You can sweeten with anything you would like: honey, brown sugar, agave, sugar, etc. You may want to wait to sweeten until serving as everyone has differing preferences.
  • protein drink or powder? Like I said, this recipe is a result of needing to drink two protein drinks a day. But you don’t have to spend the extra cash on them for sure. Instead of using a chocolate protein drink, just use your favorite milk (regular milk, nondairy, almond milk, oat milk, etc.) and about 2 tablespoons of your favorite chocolate protein powder.

Ways To Vary This Recipe

  • add even more protein: up the amount of Greek yogurt added, add peanut butter, add a spoonful of cottage cheese, or use an extra high protein drink versus the classic.
  • add some espresso powder: this gives the chocolate so much more richness. I sometimes add about 1/2 teaspoon.
  • make it peanut butter chocolate: use a chocolate peanut butter protein powder or shake, or stir in a spoonful of peanut butter or even almond butter if preferred. Top with some mini chocolate chips too!

Step-By-Step-Instructions

Melted chocolate over chocolate oatmeal.

Step 1: Add all of the ingredients for the overnight oatmeal into a small bowl or jar and stir. If adding the magic shell: refrigerate for about an hour to allow it to set up a bit and then melt the chocolate chips and coconut oil in 15 second increments, stirring in between and pour over the top of the oats to make a thin shell.

Step 2: Cover and seal the container and refrigerate for at least 4-6 hours but ideally overnight. If you want to add the shell just before serving that is ok as well. If planning to eat this recipe warm, I don’t recommend adding the shell.

Recipe Tips

If you want to eat these warm, I suggest skipping the magic shell. Instead, you can stir in chocolate chips, or drizzle the melted chocolate chips over top of the oats and stir them in.

Use a chocolate protein powder or drink that you like or you will very likely not enjoy these chocolate protein overnight oats. You can use another chocolatey flavor if preferred such as chocolate peanut butter, mint chocolate, etc.

Storage

Store these overnight oats for up to 5 days in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Add an extra splash of milk if needed when serving if too much liquid has been absorbed.

Common Questions

Can you use instant oats/quick oats in this recipe?

Yes you can! You may need to adjust the amount of the instant oats though as they may not absorb as much of the milk. Also, if using instant oats, you can pop them right in the microwave and eat them, well, instantly!

Can these protein oats be made vegan or gluten-free?

They certainly can! To make them vegan, use a plant-based protein shake or milk/protein powder combo and then make sure the chocolate chips are dairy free. To make these gluten free, use certified gluten-free oats.
