Why you will love this Air Fryer BBQ Chicken Recipe

  • So simple to prep. No firing up the grill, no waiting for the oven to pre-heat. My Air Fryer doesn’t require preheating and most preheat so quickly. Simple ingredients and minimal prep, just rub the chicken and pop it in the air fryer basket. Cook and flip, not much else!
  • A great option for weekly meal prep. If you are a Sunday meal prepper and you are already using your oven, stove top and everything in between, you can make the most of this time by adding this chicken into the air fryer. Make the most of your food prep time, and then eat off of them during the week.
  • An easy meal to pair with any side. BBQ chicken is a great dinner to pair with just about anything. Instant Pot Mac and cheese and street corn are two of our favorites. Ingredients and Substitutions

See full list of ingredients with exact measurements below in recipe card.

Raw chicken breasts, bbq sauce, seasoning and oil on surface.
  • chicken: we use boneless skinless chicken breasts when making this barbecue chicken recipe. Even in size for best results, and if one is super thick, pounding the chicken will help make for even cooking.
  • oil: use this directly on the chicken breast. You can use a spray bottle of oil or brush it on. I like to spray the oil onto the seasoned chicken as well so it’s difficult to use a brush then. Also, some air fryers recommend not using the aerosol spray oils so in this recipe, it refers to a spray like the misto spray in which you add the oil and then spray.
  • seasoning: the seasoning used in this simple bbq chicken rub includes garlic powder, paprika, sea salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper. The cayenne is optional if you don’t like the heat. You can use smoked paprika for bolder flavor. Sometimes we also like to add some ground mustard or brown sugar to the mix.
  • BBQ sauce: Use your favorite barbecue sauce to make this air fryer barbecue chicken breast the easiest, but if you are feeling like having some fun, you can always make your own sauce.

Step-By-Step Instructions

  • The key with making chicken in the air fryer is getting the spices to stay on the chicken. Adding some cooking spray or brushing with oil before adding the seasoning will do this.
  • For best results, select chicken breasts that are similar in thickness or pound the chicken before hand to make them more even.

Step 1: In a small bowl, stir together the garlic powder, salt, pepper, paprika and cayenne pepper (if using).

Step 2: Spray one side of your chicken with oil or brush with olive oil and then sprinkle the seasoning all over and gently press it into the chicken. Repeat on the other side.

Step 3: Spray or brush oil onto the the basket of the air fryer and then add the chicken top side/presentation side down in a single layer into the air fryer. Heat at 360°F for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes is up, flip the chicken. Place back into the air fryer and cook for another 8-10 minutes or until the barbecue chicken just reaches 165°F internal temperature in the thickest part. Cooking time can vary based on the size of your chicken.

Step 4: Once the thickest part of the chicken reaches about 160°F, generously spread the BBQ sauce over the top and sides of the chicken. Place back in the air fryer for about 1-2 minutes. The BBQ sauce will cook really fast so you really don’t need to put it in for too long at all.

Step 5: Remove and let the chicken rest for about 5 minutes before cutting and serving.

Recipe Tips

  • For best results, pound the chicken to make it as even as possible. If you have chicken that is very thick on one side and thin on the other, it can cause one side to be over cooked while the other is under cooked.
  • Use room temperature chicken breasts. For even and consistent cooking, let your chicken sit out for about 15 minutes before you cook it.
  • Chicken breasts certainly come in all shapes and sizes. If you have very large, thick (over an inch and a half) chicken, it will take a bit longer to cook for sure. If your breasts are small, you may want to check in after less time. A meat thermometer is key for this so that you will have tender moist chicken.
  • You do not want to cook the chicken the entire time with the BBQ sauce. Only add it to the air fryer barbecue chicken breasts in the end. You will end up with very black chicken if not!
  • Switch up the regular paprika for smoked paprika to bring out the smoky BBQ flavor in this air fryer BBQ chicken!

Storage

To store leftover chicken, wrap in aluminum foil or place in an airtight container and refrigerate for 3-4 days. You can air fry to reheat for about 3-4 minutes at 375°F, adding 1-2 minutes if not fully heated.

To freeze cooked chicken, allow it to cool completely first and then double wrap it and store in the freezer for up to 3 months.

So delicious and moist! Mine took 1/2 the time the recipe suggests so I would check the temp after the 10 min!

    1. Lorie says:

Definitely can vary in time, so thanks for the reminder! Glad you love this one–it’s a weekly recipe here!

You’re right! 10 ounces of thinner breast – 7 minutes per side was plenty.

Haven’t tried yet but sure it will be great! Could I use chicken thighs instead? Would the cooking time be different?

    1. Lorie says:

Hi! You could absolutely use chicken thighs. If you use in bone in or boneless that may shift the time slightly either more or less. But if you have a meat thermometer, just check to make sure you hit just under 165 before pulling them you are good!

    1. Lorie says:

Amazing!! We make this chicken almost weekly. Glad to hear it!

  8. Sheri says:

Can you cook the chicken from
    frozen?

    1. Lorie says:

Hi! You can. From what I have read, frozen chicken is best cooked at 400 degrees F for 15 minutes, flip and cook another 15-20 minutes or until it reaches 165. Just keep an eye on it and you should be good to go!
