A French Toast Bake is a bread and egg filled casserole of sweet perfection. And I just can’t get enough of them. Ever.
And when it is made with thick Texas Toast, then it really doesn’t get any better at all!
This bread pudding like casserole is a perfect breakfast and whips up in no time. I love that no one has to stand over the griddle with this recipe–instead, you can sip coffee together or snuggle in front of the TV while it’s baking.

What you will need to make this recipe:
- The pears are technically optional in this French Toast Bake with Texas toast but you will certainly be missing out if you skip them. Well, at least if you are a pear fan. If not, do skip them. I use Bartlett most of the time when I opt for pears, but there are plenty other options out there!
- Texas toast or a nice thick cut bread does really well in this recipe. You could use another type of bread but will surely need more like 14-16 slices to soak up all of the egg and milk mixture.
You can make this egg free with a combination of flax and milk. Use the same amount of milk but with 5 tablespoons of flax meal. And then make sure to allow it to chill for about 15 minutes. That should do the trick!
How to make this recipe:
Slice up the Texas toast into bite sized pieces. For best results, use day old bread. You don’t have to do this, but I find the bread doesn’t get too soggy this way. (step 1)
Whisk together the eggs, vanilla, milk and maple syrup until smooth. Pour the mixture over the bread and toss to combine and allow to coat all of the bread evenly. (step 2)
If you are adding pears, slice the pears and toss them with the cinnamon and brown sugar. Then add them to the bread mixture. If you are not using any pears, toss the cinnamon and brown sugar with the bread mixture. (steps 3 and 4)
Bake until golden brown and egg is cooked through. Enjoy with an extra drizzle of maple syrup! (step 5)
Notes and Tips:
- You do not have to use Texas toast, but a nice thick cut bread does do really well in general for this French Toast bake. You could use a thick Brioche bread as well like I do for this Cinnamon Roll Baked French Toast.
- You could make this ahead of time and allow the bread to soak in the egg mixture overnight. For best results, prep just the night before baking.

Easy Baked French Toast with Texas Toast
Ingredients
- 12 slices texas toast
- 6 large eggs
- 1 1/2 c whole milk
- ¼ c maple syrup
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2½ tsp cinnamon
- 3 T brown sugar
- 2 medium ripe pears, sliced, optional
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350° F.
- Cut or tear bread into small, 1-2 in. pieces and add to a 2-3 qt. greased casserole dish. (For best results, use day old bread or bread that is slightly stale. You can bake the bread pieces at 325°F for about 30 minutes as another option.)
- In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, maple, and vanilla. Pour egg mixture over bread and mix to coat well and allow all the mixture to be absorbed. (hands work well for this part!)
- If you are adding the pears, slice them into small pieces and then toss them with the cinnamon and brown sugar. If you are not, toss the cinnamon and brown sugar together in a bowl without the pears. Add the pears to the bread mixture and stir to combine. Or sprinkle the cinnamon and brown sugar mixture over top of the bread and egg and lightly toss.
- Bake for 30 minutes or until bread on top is browned and egg is cooked through.
- Cool for 5-10 minutes and then serve with warm maple syrup.
- Store leftovers in refrigerator.
