Vegan waffles with syrup and sliced apple.

This recipe was originally published March 2017 and updated February 2021.

Crispy waffles with a big drizzle of maple syrup are always a good idea. These Apple Cinnamon Vegan Waffles are a simple and hearty breakfast that everyone can enjoy.

I am not vegan, nor is anyone in my family, however, these waffles are devoured every time all the same--this vegan waffle recipe is number one in our house. These Carrot Cake Waffles are always a close second though.

    We love this recipe because:

    • great flavor: I am all about a classic waffle, but add apple and cinnamon and the flavors, though simple, are next level.
    • hearty and filling: oat flour for the win. Gotta have my oatmeal! Fuel that tastes even better in waffle form.
    • kid friendly: when my son was starting out with solids, I used to make these, often without the sweetener for easy to grab, delicious food. He was a fan from the start!
    • 10 minutes to prep: honestly, probably about 6 minutes and then waiting for the waffle maker!

These will be a family favorite as well!

What you will need to make this recipe:

    • oat flour: you can easily make this yourself so don't worry if you don't have any. All you need is some rolled oats. Add them to the blender until fine.
    • grated apple: I opted for grated apple so that for really small bits of apples versus larger chunks. Plus grating an apple is easier than chopping it up really small in my opinion.
    • oil: I often use canola but have made this vegan waffle recipe with melted coconut oil and had no issues.
    • baking powder: for best results, make sure it is nice and fresh!
    • cinnamon
    • almond milk: we opt for unsweetened vanilla usually for even more flavor. If you need a nut free option, soy milk or oven a coconut milk beverage will work.
    • sugar: The apple adds a touch of natural sweetness, but some sugar rounds it all out for sure.

    How to make these:

Not much to it! Start by preheating your waffle iron.

Whisk together the oat flour, cinnamon, salt, and baking powder. Add the oil, milk, vanilla and sugar and stir to combine.

    Fold in the grated apple.

Spray the waffle iron with oil and spoon batter in. Allow to cook according to waffle iron, making adjustments as needed. Enjoy with all your favorite toppings!

    Notes and Tips:

    • You can make your own oat flour easily by blending it in a high powered blender until fine. This is a really cost effective way to make this vegan waffle recipe.
    • Know your waffle iron. My waffle iron is seriously never to be trusted. When it tells me it's ready, I know I still have a couple extra minutes before the waffles are actually ready. This takes time if your waffle iron is new. I find these apple cinnamon waffles always take just a touch longer to cook in general. Run a test waffle to make sure if you would like!
    • Like your waffles extra crispy? Me too! Pop them in the toaster for about 30 seconds before serving. I do this with just about every waffle I make. I am a sucker for crispy waffles. You can also do this in the oven for several minutes for directly on the metal racks.

    Ingredients

    • 1 ¼ c oat flour
    • 2 teaspoon baking powder
    • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
    • 2-3 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1 c almond milk I use vanilla
    • 3 T oil I use canola or melted coconut oil
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2 - 3 T sugar maple syrup works well too!
    • ⅓ c grated apple about one small apple

    Instructions

    • In a medium bowl, combine flour, cinnamon, baking powder, and sea salt. Stir.
    • Add in the milk, oil, sugar and vanilla and stir to combine. Fold in the grated apple. Allow the waffle batter to rest for about 5-10 minutes if time allows.

    • Cook according to waffle iron or more if more brown is desired.
    • Top with your favorite toppings and enjoy!

      Can you use regular flour?

I haven’t tried with regular flour but the conversion is not 1:1. Oat flour is 1.4 cups to 1 cup regular flour. So From my math you would need a bit less than 1 cup of regular flour. I will have to test it out and see!!

I happened to find you because I wanted some light, fluffy pancakes today. Now, I am hooked to your website. They turned out great, and I really enjoyed the recipe.

I read about you from your website menu. My mother was born and reared in Cincinnati. So, we have a little something in common.

Have a safe and wonderful Memorial Day weekend. ????

Excited to make these for my daughter w multiple food allergies. Can I do apple sauce versus apple pieces? What would the conversion be? Thanks.

Yes, you should be able to use apple sauce. I haven’t tried it using apple sauce but I would use about 1/4 cup.

Mine didn't come out quite as beautiful as yours because I kept opening the waffle iron (oops), but they were delicious and I will definitely make these again!

I seriously need to join the club, and buy a waffle maker too! I don't have one either, that is until nowwwww 🙂 I don't know what I been waiting for, but I need to try out this recipe, and I am glad you got some other recipe up your sleeves. I'm obsessed with anything oats, just like yourself, so this will be a nice change to enjoy in the morning. Thank you!!!
