This Red, White and Blue Milkshake is a pretty but simple way to get you into the patriotic mood with layers of red, white and blue!

Red white and blue milkshake with whipped cream and fruit.

This recipe was originally published June 2018 and updated June 2020.

My grandpa was born on Flag Day and this Red, White and Blue Milkshake recipe was created to celebrate him.

I would call him every year on June 14 and tell him it was a special day and remind him that it was Flag Day. And of course he would laugh and then I would tell him I didn't forget his birthday.

He had a stroke right after his birthday the year I posted this recipe. And not long after he died. Missing him for sure, but making this Red, White and Blue Milkshake makes my heart warm and I get to think of all the special moments we had.

Aside from the memories, this milkshake is refreshing, and so fun to slurp--for the adults and the kids.

So here's to the red, white and blue! And sipping on it too!

    What you will need:

    • Big, and I mean be generous on the big scoops of ice cream, okay?
    • I tried this once using strawberry ice cream for the red layer, I wasn't a fan. Plus only using one flavor works better for me.
    • If you want a true red and blue, you can opt for food coloring instead of the fruit.

If you love this recipe, celebrate 4th of July or Flag Day with this Red, White and Blue Funfetti Cake Dip!

vanilla ice cream, milk and berries on counter.

    How to make this recipe:

    1. I make each color layer one at a time and then combine everything in the end.
    2. Blend up the blueberries, a splash of milk and 2 scoops of ice cream. You want this to be thick so the layers don't fall through instead of staying separate. I say ¼ cup milk for each layer, but start with less and then add if you need more. Pour the blueberry shake in a glass and freeze.
    3. Repeat with the other layers and freeze in separate glasses for about 15-20 minutes.
    4. Pour evenly into serving glasses and add whipped cream and a straw. Enjoy!

    Notes:

    • You will want the shakes to be thick. If you make them too thin, the top layer will just fall right into the layer underneath. Trust me, I learned that lesson reallllly quick.
    • You can make these Red, White and Blue Milkshakes ahead of time and then pull them from the freezer and top with whipped cream when you are ready. Just let them thaw for a bit or eat them with a spoon.

    Ingredients

    • 6 large scoops vanilla ice cream
    • ¾ c milk
    • 1 c blueberries
    • 7 strawberries
    • whipped cream, optional

    Instructions

    • In a blender combine blueberries, 2 scoops of ice cream and about 2-3 tablespoons of milk. Blend until smooth. Add more milk if too thick that the blender won't blend.
    • Pour into a glass and place in the freezer.
    • Add 2 scoops of vanilla and 2 tablespoons of milk to blender and blend until smooth. Again, adjust milk if needed and then pour into a glass and place in the freezer.
    • Combine 2 scoops of ice cream and 2-3 tablespoons of milk along with strawberries to blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a cup and freeze. After about 15-20 minutes, pour the "blue" shake evenly into serving cups. Pour the vanilla layer on top of that and then the strawberry. Top with whipped cream and enjoy!

    Notes
