Ingredients

  • 4-5 strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 5 fresh basil leaves
  • 2 oz. tequila
  • 1 oz. Contreau or another orange liqueur
  • oz. lime juice freshly squeezed
  • 2 teaspoon honey or agave
  • sea salt if desired
  • ice cubes

Instructions

  • Add the strawberries and basil to the bottom of a cocktail shaker (or glass that can be sealed and shaken). Gently muddle to release the flavors. You will smell the basil when it is muddled.
  • Add the remaining ingredients and several ice cubes into the shaker and shake well for about 15 seconds.
  • If salting the rim of your serving glass, run the inside of a lime around the rim to wet. Dip the glass into salt to cover. Add several fresh ice cubes to the glass and pour the margarita. Garnish with fresh berries, lime and basil. Enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • Bond said it best, "Shaken, not stirred." To really make the best strawberry basil cocktail, shaking is key. It aerates the cocktail giving the liquid more texture. Even if you don't have a cocktail shaker, you can still do it. Put it in a jar or container that you can close and seal.
  • When it comes to ice cubes, bigger is better. Love small crushed ice pieces? They are not ideal in margaritas. Larger ice cubes melt at a much slower rate so your cocktail will not get overly diluted too quickly.
  • It may be tempting to dump this into the blender, but frozen margaritas are not equal to on the rocks. I have not tested this frozen to date, but plan to do so soon. Frozen margaritas typically require more honey or agave and more lime juice.
